Lifeline Text trial leading innovation in suicide prevention sector

A new trial designed to support those who are struggling via text message was launched recently by Lifeline Australia.
The Lifeline Text trial provides direct access to Lifeline's Crisis Supporters via text message who can listen and support those needing assistance.
It will be available for the next few months as part of a feasibility study around the development of a national text-based crisis support service.
Complementing Lifeline’s 13 11 14 telephone crisis line which receives more than a million requests for help each year, the Lifeline Text trial will also look to identify how the service may improve the provision of mental health services to Australians.
Amanda McAtamney, Suicide Prevention Project Lead at Everymind said the Lifeline Text trial demonstrates just some of the innovative work underway across the suicide prevention sector.
“The trial is a great opportunity to gauge how services like this can contribute to suicide prevention and support the delivery of mental health services for people in crisis,” Ms McAtamney said.
Through the use of modern technology the trial is aiming to reach more people in crisis particularly those aged 15 to 44 years by delivering compassionate, non-judgmental support from Lifeline's trained Crisis Supporters via text message.
To access the service, text 0477 13 11 14 between 5.00pm and 9.00pm (Adelaide time) seven days a week.
