Direct access to the NCIS is available to death investigators and researchers. All users are required to seek appropriate approvals from their coronial jurisdiction and provide written agreement to conditions of access. For research projects, this is extended to the organisation and the individuals conducting the research.
The NCIS facilitates various access levels dependent on the requirements of the user. This includes control of access to identifying, non-identifying information and open or closed cases. Access to the NCIS is via a password protected login which follows standard ICT security measures.
The database is hosted on a dedicated, local server administered by the Department of Justice and Regulation (DJR) in Victoria. All firewalls and security standards are in alignment with DJR best practice for ICT security.
